Etsy listing photo size, first-photo shape and the unedited-photo rule
Updated
Etsy recommends listing photos with a width and height of at least 2000 pixels. The first photo should be at least 635 pixels in width and height, so that it does not show lower in search results. Etsy also asks for a horizontal (landscape) or square first photo. Each listing must include at least one unedited photo of the item against a real background.

Listing photo size
We recommend your listing photos have a width and height of at least 2000 pixels or more. Your first listing photo should have a width and height of at least 635 pixels to avoid showing up lower in searches.
Etsy also says this about file size:
Images larger than 1MB in file size may not finish uploading, especially on a slower internet connection.
File types
Etsy accepts .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic files. Etsy does not support animated .gif files or transparent .png files:
If a file contains transparency, the transparent parts of the image will appear black on Etsy.
First photo shape and thumbnails
Etsy’s best practices give the shape of the first photo:
The first photo in a listing should be horizontal (landscape) or square. This ensures that the center focal point of the image appears in the cropped thumbnail views.
Your first listing photo also dictates the shape of the photos that follow.
In the thumbnail recommendations, the same page also says:
Avoid square crops. Upload horizontal or landscape images.
Etsy does not give a pixel size for thumbnails. Etsy crops each thumbnail from your photo, and you set the crop with the thumbnail adjustment tool:
Make sure that your thumbnail images have enough of a border that they can be cropped to square, portrait, and landscape thumbnails without losing some of the product.
The unedited-photo rule
Your listing must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, meaning the photo hasn’t been edited or changed in any way. Some exceptions may apply depending on the types of items you sell.
You can edit the other photos, also with AI:
Outside of your required unedited photo, you can still use photo-editing tools, including AI, to adjust lighting or color, crop or resize images, or change backgrounds.
Etsy gives one more best practice for AI edits:
If you use AI to edit any of your listing photos, note whether images were edited in your listing description.

How SweepSet images compare with Etsy’s rules
SweepSet makes listing images on a white background from one product photo:
- One landscape image at 2700x2025, named “Etsy”. This image is for the first photo. Its height is more than 2000 pixels. The product fits in a square that is 70 percent of the image height, so square, portrait and landscape thumbnail crops show all of the product.
- Two square images at 2000x2000. These meet Etsy’s 2000-pixel recommendation. In the “Listing” image, the product fills 70 percent of the width or height. In the “Amazon main” image, the product fills 85 percent.
- One portrait image at 1600x2000. Etsy recommends a landscape or square first photo, so do not use this image first.
- Four scene images at 1024x1024 in each set. These are larger than Etsy’s 635-pixel minimum for the first photo and smaller than its 2000-pixel recommendation.
All SweepSet images are JPEG files, so they have no transparent areas.
All SweepSet images are edited photos. SweepSet cuts the product from your photo and puts it on a new background. Your original photo can be the unedited photo if it shows the actual item against a real background.
Prepare Etsy listing photos with SweepSet
- Take a photo of the item against a real background. Keep this photo without edits.
- Upload the photo to SweepSet.
- Download the 2700x2025 “Etsy” image.
- On Etsy, add the “Etsy” image as the first photo.
- Add your unedited photo to the same listing.
- Use the thumbnail adjustment tool to examine the square, portrait and landscape crops.
- In the listing description, write which photos you edited.
